Who Needs A Car

Everyone is fond of something.  Women are crazy about cosmetics, textiles, furniture and the list goes on.  In the case of men, they prefer electronic objects and automobiles to purchase.  The automobile which you would like to buy may be a new one or used one that depends on your wish, requirement and financial availability.

Whether you possess a car or planning to purchase it, you should have some knowledge about body shapes of cars other than make and model.

With respect to body shapes cars can be classified as,

  • Hatchback
  • Sedan or Saloon 
  • SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle)
  • MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) OR MUV ( Multi Utility Vehicle)
  • Convertible
  • Coupe
  • Limousine
  • Wagon


The most preferable body shape in India is Hatchback, Sedan, MPV and SUV.  So, let’s have a look on the three.


Hatchback cars are small cars with back door entry as third or fifth door, which can be shared by cargo and passengers.

These are four door passenger cars with 4+ seats.  These are known as Saloons in British English

SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle)

These sport utility vehicles are big in size and admit more than five passengers. These are mainly designed for off-road drives.

MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) OR MUV ( Multi Utility Vehicle)

 Usually in India a vehicle which caries more than 5 passengers and used for family purposes are usually an MPV. The famous one which comes to our mind is Toyota Innova.

An alternative name for Convertible is Cabriolet.  The types of cars have detachable roofs. Modern versions are fitted with automatic hydraulic or electrical actuators.

Coupe is a two door car often sporty in nature.  A coupe generally has 2 or 4 seats in 2+2 configuration.  And the seats are smaller than average.

Luxury Sedan

Limousines are luxury sedan with long body, usually driven by a chauffeur and with a partition between driver and the passenger compartment.

The Station Wagon is the variant of sedan type car but very similar to hatchbacks.  It has an extra door at the rear side which can be either lift or tail gate.
